Beskrivelse: Yellow-legged gulls are commonly seen around town in Rome and not only along the Tiber river. They are also seen around most well-known tourist attractions, monuments and archeological sites, especially in the winter.
Titel: 1cy "pure" Caspian Gull from Ukraine in Stockholm
Beskrivelse: This Caspian Gull was ringed as a pullus on 5th June 2010 in Cherkasy near Kiev(Ukraine) by a Polish ringing programme from Gdansk. It is reported to be an individual from a "pure" population of Caspian gulls. It was sighted in the middle of Stockholm city along Skeppsbron among dozens of other gull species on 14th September 2010. Distance was 1,427km NNW from its original ringing site after 101 days. Yellow ring code: PUCZ (right leg). Metal ring number: Kiev L-009681 (left leg).
Beskrivelse: During a gull photo session along Skeppsbron downtown Stockholm this adult herring gull started to make calls.
Since that day I understand much better why a herring gull has no problem to swallow even a big fish...
Beskrivelse: In almost every park of the city of Rome it is now possible to observe a few rose-ringed parakeets, especially where there are pine trees. They were reportedly introduced in Italy during the eighties. The other European city where I have also seen many of these birds, is Brussels in Belgium, where they seem even more numerous. They are usually quite vocal and therefore easy to find through their calls. They also often fly over building areas.
Beskrivelse: In the mountains of Slovenia, this species is often attracted by hikers resting and eating on the summits. Of course, they are attracted by the possibility of receiving some food from people...
Beskrivelse: These birds are often seen when hiking in the Slovenian Alps, mostly above 1,500m. Surprisingly, most people just call them "crows"...
After all other hikers had left the summit of Mount Viševnik, I stayed behind to take a few shots because a flock of them was around the summit. This was the fourth time I was climbing that mountain and I was happy to finally have some decent photos of these birds...
Beskrivelse: In the early evening, the light was already low when I saw this male collecting worms to feed his family. The altitude was 1,580m and I was near the main mountain hut of Golica, close to the Austrain border. I was on my way down...
I have seen this bird in other parts of the Slovenian Alps.
Beskrivelse: That day I was patiently hiding in the vegetation for the possibility to see a rare "Lesser Spotted Eagle" visiting Ångermanland... and I saw this bird.
Beskrivelse: When visiting the Roman ruins of Timgad in Algeria, I saw this beautiful bird along the fence of the archeological site. It was not the only one I saw when traveling for work in Algeria... But I was not allowed to bring along my binoculars.
Beskrivelse: When visiting the Roman ruins of Timgad in Algeria I had the chance to see a pair of black wheatears collecting insects. I assume that their nest was not far away...
Since birding gear is forbidden in Algeria for security reasons, I only had my compact superzoom camera to take a few shots...

Titel: 1adult male (flying) + 1 adult female (standing and seen from 3 different angles)
Beskrivelse: When visiting the Roman ruins of Timgad in Algeria I had the chance to see a pair of black wheatears catching insects for their young.
On this combination of pictures, the female (sooty brown plumage) is seen standing in three different positions for comparison with the darker male (black plumage) that is flying.
Since birding gear is forbidden in Algeria for security reasons, I only had my compact superzoom camera to take a few shots...
Beskrivelse: Seeing that species in a park of Brussels was quite a surprise! Before that, I had only seen it long time ago, around the Virunga National Park in Eastern Congo. Nice to finally have a close view of it...
