Beskrivelse: We were looking at Yucatan Wren's ...then even the local birder 'woke-up' when the sound of this bird was in our ears. Familiar flycatcher-like but sort of 'drawn-out'... Like I heard it on the 'net'. At the distance we saw the bird... solitary like 'usual' and over-size to 'Dusky-capped' in both body and bill. Scarce in most of Yucatan - even if it is endemic as the name suggests.
No better possibility to shoot the bird occured... it went away as suddenly as it came, - all the time more than at least 100m away. So we went back to watch and'shoot' the Yucatan wren's :-)... and a family of Black-throated Bobwhites. 3 not so common endemic birds at the same spot - almost - within 15 minutes. A moment of glory !!
Seen in a mixture of extensive farmland (cattle) and spine-scrub 5-7 km S.E. of Rio Lagartos - direction San Salvador/Las Coloradas.
Beskrivelse: Mixture of extensive used cattle farmland and spine scrub S.E. of Rio Lagartos in the out back roads connected to the road to Las Coloradas 5-7 km from Rio Lagartos.
This species is an extreme endem... restricted to far costal north of Mexican state 'Yucatan' (might be found in very small numbers in Quintana Roo to) - not uncommon in suitable surroundings.
I 3 days we saw at least 5 individuals.
A superficial look at the bird makes it a 'cactus wren' - but it's distinctive different in its voice, supercilium and breast with small spots turning into 'bars' low on the side of the bird.

Beskrivelse: Orange oriole is strictly endemic to the Yucatan pen-insula. Here is a female or a young male (not easy to determinate when the bird has this position)
Beskrivelse: Endemic to 2-3 states of Mexico - not common but most common in scrub and mangrove (and smaller cities near by)in the far costal north of Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Here at 6 am in the morning at the ordinary size chicken-fence in front of a village-house - an app. 3 month old juvenile; - fully able to fly and 'escape'. By the way - the tail of the youngster shows the beginning 'shear-tail'. Another picture shows that the young bird was waiting to be 'serviced' by a parent bird. I presume that the young bird might be a female - white tail-tip - and plain white chin and breast. In 3 days 5 individuals was seen 1 male and 4 females/one juvenile. All in village Rio Lagartos and Las Coloradas.

Beskrivelse: Seen in a small (in April) roadside pond near Rio Lagartos.
... on the road between Tizimin and Rio Lagartos app. 5-6 km before Rio Lagartos.
Picture shows a non-breeding bird suggested by the whitish chin. In relation to the first up-load of this species ... I find the bill on 'my bird' in good accordance with the field-guides
Beskrivelse: Edge of mangrove - bordering spine-scrub land.
The extreme far north of Yucatan is the only place to find this bird on the 'main-land' America. The ssp. Salvadorii is endemic to the mangroves of northern Yucatan. One can find the bird commonly on some Caribbean islands.

Beskrivelse: Seen on a cemetery wall in the outskirts of the village Rio Lagartos.
Seen at dawn, not shy and one of four individuals taking of from the ground to stay close to original position.
Beskrivelse: Seen in spine scrub.
This rather skulking vireo is also in some areas found out-side the actual mangrove - as here in the spine-wood scrub between the mangrove and the farmland. Close to the cemerty in the outskirts of Rio Lagartos.
Beskrivelse: The only place in Mexico to see this bird. Sometimes a few individuals can be seen from the village. But to be sure to see them or to see more individuals one must sail into the estuary or by car visit the saltpans near Las Coloradas.
Anyone with a boat in the village will take you there for a not so small fee - it's a trip for hours - but worth the while if the boat-person knows birds and is villing to stop and show you (try asking for Diego Nuñes - he is a good guide).
Beskrivelse: The bird is maybe not so 'uncommon' but it is 'hard to se' as it most of the time is skulking inside the mangrove. Picture is not as sharp as I could wish for, but it was a hand held shot from a moving boat.
