Cracking shot of a rare species for The Gambia!
Does anybody know the status of this species in the country? It isn't threated in the book "A Field Guide to Birds of The Gambia and Senegal"...
Thank you David
It is mentioned as a race (ssp. beaudouini) of Short-toed Eagle in "Birds of The Gambia and Senegal" by Barlow and Walcher.
I saw about at least 4 Beaudouin's Snake Eagles in one week in November 2011 but did not identify any Short-toed Eagles.
Best wishes, Rune
Hello Johannes
I think that your bird also is a Beaudouin's Snake Eagle?
The fine barring in the axillaries (armpits) and on the breast just below the dark hood seems to favour this species instead of Short-toed Eagle that shows less distinct, more coarse and random barring.
Your bird is more whitish overall compared to the bird I have photgraphed. It also lacks the very fine barring in the basal part of the tail. Perhaps someone with greater experience with this species could shed some light on whether this is age-related (your bird being younger than mine?).
Best wishes, Rune
